Abstract

This research explores the phenomenon of program-level early transfer, also known as “leakiness”: the extent to which an academic program loses students to other institutions before awarding a degree or certificate. Optimally-designed transfer programs are structured to incentivize completion prior to transfer. This paper explores how successful College programs are at doing so, and may give impetus for associate deans to examine their programmatic offerings for articulation misalignment with sister programs at transfer institutions.

Overall, 63% of students who transferred did not earn an award at SLCC. General Studies is least leaky, at 54%.
