Abstract

How many students repeat math courses at SLCC, who repeats, and with what success? If the Math Department were to adopt a policy limiting the number of times a student can repeat a course, what should that policy be? Is there a point at which student performance when repeating a course declines markedly? We first present descriptive analysis of course repetition, then address these latter questions.
Results

  1. Students who repeated courses had less success than those taking the course for the first time.
  2. Approximately one third of students who failed a course the first time around had passed by the fourth time they took it.
  3. Age was a protective factor in course performance. Older students did better than younger students the first time taking a course (they repeated courses less frequently) and they also did better when repeating. Compared to those who passed the first time, students who repeated courses were higher percentage male and lower percentage white.
