Collaborative Projects

The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) welcomes participation in collaborative publicly funded projects and encourages principal investigators (PI’s) to consider the benefits of working with other organizations in proposing and completing their projects. These collaborations can be with one or more organizations, and include SLCC as either the project lead or in a supporting role.

OPPORTUNITY

As a project’s lead grantee, the college and PI benefit from collaborative partnerships by bringing in outside expertise into supporting roles and statement of work fulfillment on sponsored projects. This can not only increase the viability of a project and funding request, it can increase the output and quality of project implementation while minimizing the use or addition of resources to the college. These external partnerships can be formed with a variety of organizations including non-profits, local government agencies, other educational institutions, business and industry.

For PI’s, participating in a supporting role as a subrecipient with another organization on their grant project is a great way to gain access to public funding. In this role, the college is part of the overall project and fills distinct roles and responsibilities of the statement of work. The benefits and opportunity these type of collaborations provide to a PI include:

  • Chance to build grant experience and reputation
  • Reduce the burden of proposal preparation and submission to sponsor
  • Limit scope of work to the strengths or expertise of the PI/college
  • Ability to leverage resources of other organizations not available at the college
  • Opportunity to be part of a project without having to lead it
  • Participation in funding restricted to other types of organizations (for-profit, state government) as the lead applicant

EXPERIENCE

SLCC has an extensive background partnering with other organizations on sponsored projects in various fields of expertise including job skill training and employment, STEM, small business support, energy and solar training, student support services, bio-technology and other workforce and academic areas. The College has experience as the lead or subrecipient with funded projects from federal sponsors including the National Science Foundation, Small Business Administration, and the Departments of Labor, Energy, Education and others. Further, SLCC has and continues to partner with industry, employers, state and local agencies, non-profits and other entities.

Highlights of collaborative projects SLCC has been involved with include:

The project included a train the trainer model and involved industry research, training and content experts and more than 15 regional education institutions. This project received national attention as part of President Obama’s itinerary during a visit to the state of Utah.
