Section Delivery Modalities

*Banner schedule type codes for the different modalities appears in parenthesis after each modality title.

Co-op Education (O) - A class that balances classroom theory with periods of practical, hands-on experience prior to graduation. Through the co-op program, students can alternate academic study with full-time employment, gaining practical experience in their field of study.

Externship (X) - Like an apprenticeship or internship, an externship is typically a training program offered by SLCC in partnership with private businesses that give students brief practical experiences in their field of study as they complete their program of study.

Field Study (F) - Practical, supervised training designed to supplement formal study. Students learn practical applications of classroom material to gain skills and knowledge relevant to their course out in the field relevant to the area of study.

Hybrid (QWL) - A portion of the class is delivered in person at a set day(s) and time(s). The other portion of the class is delivered asynchronously online. Classes generally have equal portions of online asynchronous instruction (50%) and face-to-face class sessions (50%), but individual departments may adjust these percentages to fit their program needs.

Independent Study (I) - Course is designed to meet the needs of an individual student for a particular area of study. Students will work independently on the subject matter while making periodic reports to the instructor.

Individualized Instruction (INV) - Course designed to meet the needs of an individual student for a particular area of study with the instructor providing hands-on individualized instruction. Meeting times are determined between the faculty member and the student on an individual basis.

Internship (N) - Internships are temporary, on-the-job experiences intended to help students identify how their studies in the classroom apply to the workplace. Internships are individually arranged by the student in collaboration with a faculty member in the chosen discipline and a supervisor in the workplace.

Lab (A) - A lab is an instructional activity in a setting providing specialized facilities or equipment for students to master the subject matter either by performing experiments or practicing the skills being learned. The instructor generally supervises, assists, answers questions, etc., rather than making presentations. A lab is separate from the lecture although it is often associated with a lecture.

Lecture (L) - This is a traditional face-to-face course where students attend classes on campus, at a specific time, where the instructor facilitates the learning space and activities.

Lecture/Lab (K) - The integrated lecture/lab is a class that has some lecture and some hands-on components but does not require a separate time like a traditional lab. It is scheduled like a lecture course with specific day and time.

Livestream Lecture (EWL) - 100% of the course is delivered synchronously online. Class meets at a specific time, but in a virtual space via online meeting software like Zoom, where the instructor facilitates the learning space and activities.

Livestream Lab (EWA) - 100% of the course is delivered synchronously online. Class meets at a specific time, but in that virtual space via online meeting software like Zoom, where the instructor facilitates the learning space and activities. In a livestream lab, there is an expectation for demonstrating skills or concepts, supervised by the instructor.

Livestream Lecture/Lab (EWK) - 100% of the course is delivered synchronously online. Class meets at a specific time, but in that virtual space via online meeting software like Zoom, where the instructor facilitates the learning space and activities. Class combines lecture and lab portions of the class. With a portion of the class being a lab, there is an expectation for demonstrating skills or concepts, supervised by the instructor.

Online (W) - In an online section, all coursework is housed in Canvas with the instructor facilitating learning activities, but there is no specific place or time required for participation.

Online Lab (WA) - In this type of online section, all coursework is housed in Canvas with the instructor facilitating learning activities, but there is no specific place or time required for participation. An online lab is an instructional activity for students to master the subject matter either by performing experiments or practicing the skills being learned. The instructor generally supervises, assists, answers questions, etc., rather than making presentations. A lab is separate from the lecture although it is often associated with a lecture.

Online Lecture/Lab (WK) - In this type of online section, all coursework is housed in Canvas with the instructor facilitating learning activities, but there is no specific place or time required for participation. The online integrated lecture/lab is a class that has some lecture and some hands-on components but does not require a separate time like a traditional lab. It is scheduled like a lecture.

Study Abroad (D) - An experiential education opportunity through which students receive credit for courses taken outside of the college. This can be in-state, out of state or out of the country as needed for the area of study. Programs vary widely in content and duration. Before students go to study aboard, there is often an expectation that the class meets on campus to discuss the content and circumstances surrounding the class.

Supervised Instruction (SI) - Supervised Instruction in an area of specialization that may be conducted either on or off campus with the student(s) working at their own pace, making periodic reports to the instructor.
